Momo Film’s first movie is ‘My Small Land’

Momo Films, Canada’s first distribution company focusing soley on Japanese films, was founded in the fall of 2022 by Aki Takabatake! Momo Film’s first movie is ‘My Small Land’ (Dir. Emma Kawawada), which was named the Special Mention of Amnesty International Film Award, at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2022.

Canadian boutique distribution company, Momo Films Inc., was founded in the fall of 2022. Momo Films will

Synopsis: Sarya is a 17-year-old Kurdish girl who left her homeland with her family and was raised in Japan since childhood. She’s a typical high school student like any other ordinary Japanese kid her age. After the day her family’s refugee application is rejected, their lives start to unravel. Without a legal status to stay in Japan, Sarya, who lives in Saitama prefecture, loses her freedom to work, go to college, and see her friend in Tokyo. Is her wish to stay in Japan a “crime”? 

My Small Land is an accomplished and promising debut from new director Emma Kawada. It tackles a very important global issue from a perspective that feels both meaningful and unique, allowing it to be a standout in terms of films about immigration.
