When I first heard about the Coronavirus, I was imagining a simple flu-like virus that needs some simple precautions. Not in a million years could I have imagined that “Corona” would become one of the most severe catastrophes in the history of mankind. How rapidly would it become an unstoppable tornado and disrupt our peaceful lives, our thriving homes & our countries, is still mind boggling!
Fear, sadness, stress, and panic are lurking heavy in the air in every village, town, city, and country, as each nation struggles to fight this invisible ruthless enemy. An enemy lurking all around us, ready to strike a fresh prey every second of every hour. My mind keeps racing like a train running at the speed of lightening with a burning question. Who will emerge as a true leader of mankind? Who would be that amazing, indispensable commander in chief, who will be victorious in this catastrophe?
As a young girl I learned that great leaders don’t set out to be just leaders, they set out to make a difference. It’s always about the goals and how to achieve it. A leader chooses a destination, convinces others of the merits of taking the trip, shows them how they can get there, and then leads them on the journey. Will it be the United State of America a worldly superpower? Or China the manufacturing leader of the world? Maybe Saudi Arabia the oil king of the globe? Not forgetting Russia with its superior military? Canada should be on top of the list as a nation that understands human rights and has the best healthcare system worldwide. Others that come to mind are Pakistan with its promising prime minister, or even the United Kingdom that weathers all situations or a strong woman prime minister of New Zealand who has proven her empathetic nature towards her people in the past!
A true leader has to have a vision and share it with those with whom they work. And as a leader, he/she must build consensus for that vision. If one wastes time standing around waiting to find consensus, then they’re not leading anyone. The leader is out in front of the pack determining the proper path. At times a leader can head the wrong way and need to reverse course. Other times, as the leader of the pack, he/she will be the first to step into danger. But as a leader, one must be willing to take calculated risks.
Which great leader will wear the crown of humanity in this war against coronavirus? In this global crisis it’s not about the wealth each nation has or the resources, the think tanks that sit in the White House have or the countries with the most up-to-date technology. It will be all about the vision of a leader, a leader who can take the right actions at the right time, as well as make difficult decisions, and take drastic measures for the nation and the good of mankind. That amazing nation and its leader will go down in history proudly wearing the crown as the savior of humanity.
In order for any nation to go down in history in golden words the leader needs to take swift decisions for a complete lock-down and should have the ability to rally the whole nation behind him. A true leader must have the vision to make difficult choices, understanding the dire consequences of the coronavirus, and can inspire everyone, motivate, and defend his/her nation strongly. In my opinion a leader who will keep his/her people first, is the leader who will wear the crown of humanity and will go down in history in golden words.
Like the great leader Martin Luther King said: “A true leader is not a searcher of consensus but a molder of consensus”. Dedicated to all the leaders that will rise and show true leadership in this calamity.
